A couple of months ago YouTube was officially blocked in Sudan. Today we hear that YouTube is officially blocked in Kuwait. Who's next?
While as of this moment the reason of blocking YouTube in Sudan is unknown, Kuwait has officially declared why it decided to block YouTube in Kuwait, even though the reason might not be valid to everyone. The reason Kuwait provided is that YouTube contains inappropriate videos offending our religion. I guess they are specifically talking about the video where someone tried melodizing the holy Qur'an. I'm not sure if this video is still available on YouTube or not, but a friend of mine showed it to me last month and we had to flag it as inappropriate so that the YouTube team takes action and removes the video. Can this be the sole reason of blocking YouTube in Kuwait?
Let me predict who's next. Perhaps the UAE? Since some networking websites like myspace and Flickr are or have been blocked before in the UAE, why not YouTube as well?

UPDATE: Apparently the ban order has been reconsidered and got canceled for now. YouTube is not blocked in Kuwait. [Link]

i find the reason not convincing.
yes i do admit there are lots of offensive videos to our religion on youtube, but there are good vidoes that present islam, as well. are we going to block every thing that has some offensive ations by indivsuals?? then we'll end up blocking satellites and we as an islamic nation will be back to live in the dark eras. it's just like when for a religoius reason some branches of science were banned.
blocking the web-site won't change the fact that these videos still exist. when muslims watch these videos they disapprove them and take the correct action which is flagging the video as inaproperiate. and if this web-site is blocked the vidoes can be uploaded to 100 other web-site, will we end up blocking internet???
this is the problem with our countries we take the negative reaction>> a web-site like youtube can be used to present the real islam and to adorn its image. governments should believe that the public is mature enough to deal with these things.
blocking web-sites is not the solution
Wow, I wouldn't be surprised if Oman goes ahead and blocks youtube if you ask me!
What the..? I sure do hope this doesn't end up happening in Oman! Blocking Skype is pissing me off enough for now.
Just because there are inappropriate videos in there does not mean they should block the whole thing. If that's the case, then they should pretty much block countless websites out there.
Youtube can be used to our benefit, too ;).
I find the reason to be rather odd! It does not make sense since its some idiots who made it to youtube, but they ignored the fact that there are other videos supporting Islam or whatever... I just checked, its not blocked yet! I was able to go on... so will see
its canceled :-) They arent blocking youtube for the time being! YAY
I watched a few seconds of that clip of the Quran and flagged it 3ala 6ool, it sure was very disturbing! but yet again it's not a valid reason to get such a famous website to be blocked.
happy for the Kuwaitis to have youtube again, I can't imagine browsing the net without opening youtube.=p
UAE will block the youtube if someone posts offensive videos about the royal families.
Youtube is no more blocked in Sudan
Hala
Hala: Glad to hear that!
It seems that this blocking of Youtube in sudan is in parallel to the blocking of Google maps there in Sudan due to the export law of the USA. Also, there has been a lot of companies avoiding a deal of business there in Sudan to prevent a lot more killings to happen. Also, one way of doing business there in Sudan to prevent any more killings is to build a school there where the children of Sudan will benefit the more. Of course, there is no profit here but at least i know that the real profit here is that there will be a development there in Sudan. I wouls like to share The Emma Academy Project as a part of my contribution to help end the war there. I hope that a lot of people would also do the same. This school will be built there in Leer, Sudan and it will be the foundation of learning for the children there in Leer.
