Swine Flu Dilemma

It looks like lots of countries in the Middle East like Jordan, Yemen, Bahrain, Qatar AND Oman have got their first confirmed cases of swine flu, and it also looks that these cases were of young students who recently came back from the US and different countries with many swine flu cases.

I've just heard that Oman got the first 3 confirmed cases of returning students from the US. Bahrain also 3 cases of returning students from the US, as well as Qatar, Jordan and Yemen. Sweet. I'm not worried one bit about catching the swine flu in my city here in the US. Up until now, there are only 4 confirmed cases in my city, which is not too bad for a city with a population of 250,000. I'm only worried about catching this thing in the airport or my flight back home. I will be traveling through Houston, one of the largest hubs in the country and also one of the top cities in the US with the most swine flu (H1N1 or whatever) confirmed cases. Travelers will be in Houston from all over the country, and they will be traveling to different places. And the bad thing is that I will have a 6-hrs transit in Houston + the 15 hrs flight to Dubai, so I need to be extra cautious when I travel next week.

Don't worry about it Amjad. It's less dangerous than normal seasonal flu.

No Identity: That's not true. It's been announced on Oman TV that 3 of the students who got back to Oman from the US recently got back with swine flu.

Check Oman News Agency (www.omannews.gov.om) for more details.

Here is the statement from Oman News Agency:

Sultanate / Three cases with Swine Flue discovered

Muscat, June 17 (ONA)--- An official source at the Health Ministry announced that three cases of H1N1 of Omani students studying in U.S.A were discovered.

In a statement to Oman News Agency (ONA), the source said that the Health Ministry were notified of the Omani students coming from U.S.A especially after discovering a number of patients from among this group in the neighboring counties. After arrival in the Sultanate on 13th June through one of the GCC airports, samples were collected from them, he added.

‘The H1N1 Control and Follow UP Committee has taken all appropriate measures including dispensing medications for the patients whose conditions are now stable. There is no need to transfer them to hospital. They were advised to stay at home till they are fully recovered. Samples were also collected from their families and they are followed up every now and then, he furthered.

‘H1N1 patients will not be transferred to hospital, except when there is a bad need for this when the case is severe.

It is worth mentioning that according to WHO statistics, the number of patients as of 17th June at the Eastern Mediterranean countries stands at 100 in 11 countries. The number of countries affected, after discovering three cases in the Sultanate, now stands at 12 with no single death among the discovered cases.
